Itโll feel like winter again in Canberra and southern NSW this weekend as a strong cold front is due to move across the region tomorrow (Friday 25 September).
With overnight minimums expected to hit zero on Saturday and Sunday nights, Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Helen Reid said ahead of tomorrowโs change that the weather will feel spring-like โjust to lull you into a false sense of security ahead of whatโs behindโ.
โThe cold air coming through will be quite a shock to what weโve just become accustomed to with spring. It will feel very wintry and with the wind chill factor we need to be very careful,โ she said.
Ms Reid said it will be so cold that sheโs expecting snowfall to dust the Brindabellas on Saturday, as 5-15mm of rain is due over Canberra.
โItโs going to feel really quite like itโs winter all over again and we just put away all our woolly clothing, but thatโs what happens in spring.
โWith this dynamic system we always have to be careful of some thunderstorms, theyโre not likely to be in the severe category, but any thunderstorms will add to the shower activity weโre expecting.โ
It wonโt stay cold for long however; Ms Reid described the chilly weekend ahead as just a โvery quick burst of winterโ.
โThis one is moving through very quickly, come Monday youโll just be opening up your windows to sunny skies,โ she said.
With school holidays beginning, Ms Reid warned drivers to be wary of travel over the weekend. โDo be careful as youโre travelling, roads could become quite icy and might even be closed depending on how much snow falls โฆ with the winds we could see blizzard conditions in alpine regions.โ
