ACT school holidays start with wintry blast, possible snow

It’ll feel like winter again in Canberra and southern NSW this weekend as a strong cold front is due to move across the region tomorrow (Friday 25 September).

With overnight minimums expected to hit zero on Saturday and Sunday nights, Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Helen Reid said ahead of tomorrow’s change that the weather will feel spring-like “just to lull you into a false sense of security ahead of what’s behind”.

“The cold air coming through will be quite a shock to what we’ve just become accustomed to with spring. It will feel very wintry and with the wind chill factor we need to be very careful,” she said.

Ms Reid said it will be so cold that she’s expecting snowfall to dust the Brindabellas on Saturday, as 5-15mm of rain is due over Canberra.

“It’s going to feel really quite like it’s winter all over again and we just put away all our woolly clothing, but that’s what happens in spring.

“With this dynamic system we always have to be careful of some thunderstorms, they’re not likely to be in the severe category, but any thunderstorms will add to the shower activity we’re expecting.”

It won’t stay cold for long however; Ms Reid described the chilly weekend ahead as just a “very quick burst of winter”.

“This one is moving through very quickly, come Monday you’ll just be opening up your windows to sunny skies,” she said.

With school holidays beginning, Ms Reid warned drivers to be wary of travel over the weekend. “Do be careful as you’re travelling, roads could become quite icy and might even be closed depending on how much snow falls … with the winds we could see blizzard conditions in alpine regions.”
