Small an Olympian in the making
Up and comping Olympian and St Clare’s student, Keely Small, was recently recognised by the Australian Olympic Committee for her athletics achievement at the Youth Olympics Games. Small was part of the Australian team that competed at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 6-18 October 2018. At the event, she won gold in the 800m and had the honour of carrying the Australian flag at the Opening Ceremony. With recent gold in the 800m at the Pacific Games in July, Small is on track to make her senior Olympic debut in Tokyo next year.
Raiders tame Panthers
The Canberra Raiders overcame a hostile crowd and an early onslaught from the Penrith Panthers to record a 30-18 win over the Panthers on Sunday 28 July. The visitors were put on the back foot early with Panthers crossing for a quick four-pointer before being forced to do a mountain of defence as the home side had multiple back-to-back sets. Despite this, the Raiders’ defence held firm and they soon turned the tide with a try to Josh Papalii. Overall, there were six different try scorers for the Green Machine as they celebrated Sia Soliola’s 100th club match with a win. The Raiders are away to the Warriors on Friday 2 August.
Mixed fortunes for Brave
The CBR Brave and the Melbourne Ice shared the spoils in their AIHL doubleheader on 27-28 July. The Ice won Saturday’s match 3-2 after a shootout before the Brave bounced back with a 7-2 win on Sunday. CBR Brave host Adelaide Adrenalin at Phillip this weekend with matches on Saturday 3 August 5.30pm and Sunday 4 August 4.30pm.
Prince Jacko tops the field
Prince Jacko has been crowned Canberra Horse of the Year following the Canberra Racing Club’s final meeting of the season on Friday 26 July. Nick Olive claimed his 8th Canberra Trainers Premiership, while Billy Owen, despite not riding at the meeting, held on to win both the Apprentice Jockeys Premiership and overall Jockeys Premiership.
