Australian-first vehicle joins ACT Fire and Rescue

The ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R) fleet now has Australia’s first plug-in hybrid electric heavy vehicle.

It is the most modern firefighting vehicle in the world, Georgeina Whelan, Commissioner of the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA), said.

“With street level entry to reduce injuries caused by climbing in and out of the truck; total absence of carcinogenic exhaust gases around the area of the vehicle resulting in clean air; and night-vision electronic rear view mirrors to increase visibility and therefore safety – these are all features that will prevent injury to firefighters and increase the longevity of their careers,” Ms Whelan said.

“This plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is fully electric drive with a diesel ranger extended,” Mick Gentleman, ACT Minister for Police and Emergency Services, said. “This extender provides diesel capacity as a back-up only in the event of increased operational demand to ensure ACTF&R’s response is not affected.”

ACTF&R firefighters will be trained to use the vehicle.

Mr Gentleman said that the vehicle was a milestone for both the ESA and the ACT Government more broadly.

“The world around us is rapidly changing, both in terms of technology, workplace diversity and the environment,” Mr Gentleman said.

“To lead by example and take a step forward in creating a sustainable future is a step that I hope others around the nation will also be empowered to take.”

Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, said the arrival of this vehicle was another significant step towards the ACT reducing emissions in the ACT.

“The ACT is a global leader in reducing emissions. This plug-in hybrid fire truck is an Australian first and an important moment for fire services around the nation. This continues the ACT’s leadership on climate change and our efforts to encourage innovation for a zero emissions future.

“I look forward to seeing more cutting-edge vehicles taking to the road across the ACT, and the country, as we continue to work towards a cleaner future.”
