Australia’s Nacra 17 team, cousins Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin, are in the hunt for another Olympic medal after banking a win among their results on Saturday.
The Rio 2016 silver medallists have moved up to fourth place overall after posting three top-five results including a victory in the first race.
Australia is all but assured of a gold in the Laser class with Matt Wearn only needing to complete Sunday’s to collect the gold medal.
“That was potentially going to be the trickiest day of this week, so we are happy to come away with three keepers,” said skipper Waterhouse.
“We won the first race in really shifty conditions, and that was the one that we thought we would have to sail quite well strategically to do well in.”
The Italians lead the mixed event, followed by Great Britain and Germany, who are one point ahead of the Australians, with three races to go.
Jake Lilley is holding his top-10 spot in the Finn class with two heats remaining before the medal race.
Finishing eighth in Rio, the Queenslander is ninth overall after a mixed bag in super light conditions off Kamakura.
Lilley finished 15th in the first race and improved to cross sixth in the second outing.
Australia’s two skiff teams of Will and Sam Phillips (49er) and Tess Lloyd and Jaime Ryan (49erFX) finished short of qualifying for their respective medal races.
