‘Best Show ever’: 2023 Royal Canberra Show attracts 92,000 people

“We just had the best Show ever,” said Geoff Cannock, CEO of the Royal National Capital Agricultural Society, which hosts the Royal Canberra Show.

In ideal late summer weather, 92,242 people walked through the gates of EPIC to attend this year’s Show, on from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 February, and Mr Cannock said it the “biggest in at least 20 years”.

“It was fantastic, a really good result,” he said.

“You only dream of that sort of result.”

This year saw a massive surge in teenage attendees and Mr Cannock said this was due to their social media marketing campaign.

“We can tell that because of the number of people in Sideshow Alley, and our show bag operators had their best Show ever,” he said.

“We still get older people, but they’ve been dwarfed by the [numbers of] young people.”

The atmosphere was “electric” this year and Mr Cannock said “there’s nowhere like Sideshow Alley on a Friday and Saturday night”.

He said the crowds were exceptionally well behaved; there were no arrests, no complaints, and no intoxicated teenagers.

People were there to just “have a good time” and celebrate the history of Australia.

The newest additions to the Show’s lineup included a science room filled with robotics and an interactive horse experience that proved very popular.

Mr Cannock said you could feel the sense of excitement on the ground, particularly with the young attendees.

Bluey and Rainbow High show bags were the best sellers of the weekend. Mr Cannock said he was proud that Australia has the only agricultural shows in the world that sells show bags.

“Even if you go to Dreamworld, you line up, get on the ride, get off the ride,” he said.

“At the Show, you hang with mates, look at that, look at that … It’s immediate and colourful and thrilling.

“It’s a bit like going to a concert – it’s about the atmosphere, not just the performer.”
