Canberra Daily’s 2023 in review: July

ACT led the nation but not in a good way; we had the highest rates of golden staph contracted in public hospitals. The Canberra Liberals saw an opportunity to say it was on the Labor-Greens to stop spending on infrastructure and invest in healthcare.

Canberra continued its commitment to ban single-use plastics as 1 July marked the beginning of phase three of the ban. Continuing with sustainability, Canberra thrifters were thrilled to learn that Vinnies would be opening its first inner city op shop in the heart of Braddon.

CW journalist Georgia Curry caught up with locals to share stories of ghosts and public figures as Telopea Park School turned 100, and a career at the table with the Raiders former massage therapist.

Op-shoppers rejoice! New Vinnies opening in Braddon this spring

Urban Canberran thrifters learned that Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn was opening its first inner-city store on Lonsdale Street, Braddon. The store promised to be bright, colourful and the ultimate thrifter’s paradise as it planned to stay open seven days a week with a bonus of three nights of late shopping.

Canberra region shoppers were also excited by the news that Japanese casual wear store UNIQLO was set to open in the Canberra Centre.

ACT had highest rate of golden staph in Australia

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data announced Canberra as holding a title we would rather give back. The ACT was found to be the only jurisdiction in Australia whose public hospitals exceeded the national benchmark for golden staph in 2021-22. Canberra Hospital and the former Calvary Public Hospital recorded above national rates; the Canberra Liberals claimed it reflected poorly on the standard of care and hygiene in ACT public hospitals.

ACT single-use plastics ban: phase three

The beginning of July marked phase three of the ACT’s single-use plastics ban. In this latest phase, single-use plastic plates and bowls, expanded polystyrene loose-fill packaging and expanded polystyrene produce and meat trays, and plastic microbeads in cosmetic and cleaning products were all outlawed.

Ghosts, Gough and other famous Telopeans

The Telopea Park School marked a centenary in 2023 with former staff spilling some of the institution’s ghost stories to CW’s Georgia Curry. Educating Canberrans for a hundred years – and with a brief nine-day stint as a hospital in 1927 – they certainly had some tales to tell.
