In July, Canberrans were wondering what the heck is up with the tap water lately, and what can we do about the taste? The menu at OMI was far better received, with thousands reading about ‘Japanese done different’. Locals were also craving a mid-winter getaway, looking to Bermagui on the NSW Sapphire Coast. The ACT Government announced that petrol and diesel vehicles’ days are numbered, and an everyday Canberra dad won $60 million in the lottery.
Why Canberra’s tap water is tasting different and what to do about it
Locals could tell straight away when Canberra’s once award-winning drop all of a sudden tasted musty. CW caught up with Benjamin Bryant, Icon Water manager environment and sustainability, who said the earthy taste was caused by an organic compound named 2-Metholisoberneol. While the compound is naturally occurring, it doesn’t usually happen this time of year, which Mr Bryant said could be due to water mixing in the Bendora reservoir.
OMI is Canberra’s new ‘Japanese-ish’ family restaurant
OMI arrived in the ACT for the first time, after racking up popularity in Sydney and Melbourne and expanding even through the pandemic. The family restaurant chain was voted ‘Best Japanese Restaurant’ in Victoria in 2020, with a menu designed by Japanese Iron Chef, Ikuei Arakane, and Master Chef, Colin Lau. OMI opened its golden doors in the Canberra Centre at the old locale of Soi Noodle Bar, serving up Japanese(ish) comfort food.

ACT to phase out fossil fuel-powered vehicles by 2035
Following several international carmakers’ announcements that they will no longer make petrol engines by 2035, and many countries pledging to phase out sales of fossil fuel-powered cars, the ACT stated that by 2030, 80 to 90 per cent of new vehicles sold in the ACT will be zero emission vehicles, while come 2035, no new petrol vehicles will enter the market.
Canberra dad wins $60 million lottery
“Are you serious!? I’m laughing. I’m lost for words. I’m going to have a heart attack,” exclaimed one local dad after discovering his $60 million Powerball win on the evening of 1 July. After a tough year for all, the ACT resident was euphoric to hear the news. “I have children and a very large family. They’re going to be looked after. I can’t believe it.”
