Celebrate New Year’s Eve by Lake Burley Griffin

New Year’s Eve on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin is sure to be a great night, with fireworks displays at 9pm and again at midnight to welcome in 2023.

From 6pm, you can bring family and friends for a relaxing evening along the foreshore at one of four hubs: Regatta Point; Patrick White lawns; Rond Terrace; and Bowen Park at Commonwealth Park

Tara Cheyne, Assistant Minister for Economic Development, said New Year’s Eve is a wonderful way to come together as a community to celebrate the start of a new year.

“With music by local DJs BoomBox2U, it’s sure to be a fun night. Take a picnic or sample delicious treats from the many food vendors at the hubs including Grease Monkey, Sushi Sushi, BZ burger, In a Box Food Truck, Le Petit Breton, or Doing Donuts, to name a few.

“The fireworks will be launched from multiple pontoons from the central and east basins to ensure everyone will have a great view.

“I encourage people to take advantage of our public transport system, but if you do drive in, remember to park safely and legally. With a little pre-planning, it is easy for everyone attending to have a fun and safe evening.”

Getting there will be easy: Canberra bus services will run a normal Saturday service for all bus routes. Regular fares apply. Additional shuttles will be provided by Q-City Transit between the major interchanges and Queanbeyan.

Light rail services have been extended: the last service departs from the Gungahlin Place stop at 1:00am and the Alinga Street stop at 1:30am. Light rail services will run every 10 minutes from 4:30pm from the Gungahlin Place stop and 5:00pm from the Alinga Street stop on Saturday 31 December until the last service.

If you don’t have a MyWay card, you can buy bus and light rail tickets from vending machines at all light rail stops, major bus interchanges, and the Canberra Airport.

St John Ambulance will deliver CBR Night services throughout the Christmas period in the city. These services are provided from 10:00pm to 4:00am Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights including New Year’s Eve. To ensure the safety of everyone through this busy period, the number of St John Ambulance Teams providing support and assistance has been increased.
