Clean-up from wild storm continues across Canberra

The clean-up from Friday night’s severe storm continues across Canberra, as the ACT State Emergency Service (ACTESA) works through over 960 requests for assistance (RFA).

The storm was felt in both north and south Canberra, with clean-up operations expected to continue right through the week.

“We have received over 960 requests for assistance. A lot of these jobs are for leaking roofs and a lot of tree damage to properties infrastructure around the urban ACT,” Tammy Bennett from ACTESA said.

“The weather impacted the Tuggeranong, Belconnen and Gungahlin area. We found that the north Canberra region was hit harder, or more RFAs came from there, they had a lot of wind destruction, so a lot of trees fall in that area.”

“Crews have been continuing operations throughout the weekend, we expect they will continue throughout the remainder of the week.”

Anyone that has sent through an RFA that no longer need support is asked to please call through at 132 500.

The community support hub at Melba Copland Secondary College has also been extended today (Monday 11 December), and will be open between 10am-3pm.

Evoenergy are still working to restore power to ACT homes as soon as possible. Members of the public who may remain without power are encouraged to visit the facility to access charging facilities, ice for eskies, food disposal bins, and incident information.
