Goal tend Matt Climie claimed top honours recently at the CBR Brave’s annual presentation night, awarded Bravest of the Brave.
Climie was acknowledged for an impressive season where his presence in goal has been essential in the Brave’s record-breaking season. It was also revealed Climie knocked back lucrative offers from European clubs to help try and bring back the Goodall Cup back to Canberra for the second year running.
Former NHL draftee Jesse Gabrielle was one of the other big winners on the night, taking home the highest points scorer and fans choice awards.
Other award winners included: Nick Christensen – Emerging Brave; Matt Harvey – Best defensive player; Wehebe Darge – Best attacking player; Bailey Kubara – Coaches award; Andam Kambeitz – Player’s player. The CBR Brave are in semi-final action in Newcastle on Saturday 31 August up against the Sydney Bears with the winner progressing through to the grand final, against either Perth Thunder or Newcastle Northstars, on Sunday 1 September.
Raiders stumble against Manly
An 18-14 loss to the Manly Sea Eagles at GIO Stadium on Sunday 25 August has the Canberra Raiders battling to retain a place in the NRL’s top four.
With two rounds remaining, the Raiders sit third on the ladder, thanks to their superior for and against, but are equal on 30 points with Manly (4th) and Souths (5th) followed by Parramatta in 6th with 28 points.
On Sunday 1 September, the Raiders take on the Cronulla Sharks, who will be looking to secure their position in the top eight. The Raiders will be without Joey Leilua who is set to miss two weeks for a dropping knees charge.
Vikings ready for kick off
A mixture of seasoned Super Rugby professionals, and the best of the local club game, features in the Canberra Vikings team to contest the 2019 National Rugby Championship.
Led by head coach Nick Scrivener, the Vikings, who reached the semi-final stage last season, have named a strong-looking group of players that includes Wallabies internationals Tom Banks, Joe Powell, Pete Samu and Blake Enever.
The Canberra Vikings start their campaign with a visit to Melbourne to take on the Rising on Saturday 31 August. The season includes four home matches, all at Viking Park.
