Dining review: Sugar rush at Space Kitchen

You’re going to need more than one sweet tooth for this experience.

Last November, Woden’s Space Kitchen was officially named ‘Best Patisserie in Australia’ at the 2022 Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards.

No surprise to us here in the ACT, where the quirky and colourful eatery had already won ‘Best Breakfast Restaurant’ and ‘Best Patisserie’ on the state level.

To celebrate their national win, Space Kitchen is answering our prayers; no longer must we hold up the line in front of their glorious cake cabinet, mulling over which cake to purchase.

Now, for less that $50 per person, groups of four can sample seven of their famous cakes at once.

Non-Canberrans, let me explain. Space Kitchen cakes are a rarity; they are as crazy-Instagrammable as they are delicious.

Handmade into gravity-defying shapes, you crack them open to reach the creamy filling, and keep track of which one you had – because you’re going to want to try a different one next time.

I have lived and loved the foodie scene in both Sydney and Melbourne, so trust me when I say these cakes are unique to the Capital.

Given their quality, each cake retails for about $14 individually, so to have seven at once is a bargain. Plus macarons, lemon tarts, and a river of chocolate custard? Trust me, this is a big deal.

This new experience is called Willy Wonka’s afternoon tea. Why? Because everything on the plate is edible, from the fairy floss trees to the edible chocolate soil.

The scrumptious stars of the platter also reminisce on the film, with ‘Turning Violet,’ a blueberry cheesecake, the popular ‘Psychedelic Mushroom’ with lychee jelly filling, and, of course, the ‘Golden Egg’ – because Daddy, I want a golden goose.

The Dulce de Leche centre secured the egg as my personal favourite of the bunch. Veruca Salt, eat your heart out.

All of this comes with the hot drink of your choice or, for $10 more, you can have an alcoholic beverage instead.

Note: This is a sugar rush, not a light stroll. We came in with the minimum number of people for an experience and tapped out halfway through the platter.

I would definitely recommend bringing four to six or be ready to take a bunch home, especially if you’ve eaten breakfast. Space Kitchen can serve up to 60 people Willy Wonka style.

The whimsical dining experience is available Monday to Saturday from 2pm. Bookings are essential, so plan ahead – and wear your stretchy pants.
