A new mammography machine has been installed at BreastScreen ACT’s Civic clinic. As part of its breast cancer screening program, the ACT Government has spent $1.035 million to replace three ageing mammography machines at community health centres over the past 12 months. Two new machines were installed at Belconnen and Phillip earlier.

Rachel Stephen-Smith, ACT Minister for Health, said the modernisation of this equipment will provide even better health outcomes and more comfortable appointments for patients.

“The new machines provide higher quality images and are easier to use for staff,” Ms Stephen-Smith said. “New features, such as curved paddles that the breast lays in between, improve the level of comfort and create a more pleasant experience for patients. They also allow for film to be taken in less than four seconds, meaning the process is even quicker than the older machines.”

One in seven women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and nearly 80 per cent of all breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50.

Free screening mammograms are available to eligible Canberran women over the age of 40 years. Women aged 50 – 74 years should have mammograms every two years.

“I encourage all eligible Canberrans to book their free mammogram appointment, even if feeling healthy,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

Julie Solway, a registered nurse at BreastScreen ACT, said: “Screening mammograms are for people without any signs and symptoms of breast cancer. We are looking to find breast cancers early, well before they can be seen or felt.

“We also investigate any areas of interest that are detected on their mammogram. This means people may be asked to come back for further assessment once their mammogram has been reviewed.”
