Finding the right sports bra can make exercise easier

With Karen and Gillian from Colleen’s Lingerie and Swimwear

As we enter month two of this new year, perhaps you’ve made a resolution or set an intention to move your body more. Like any new habit, getting started is the hardest part. With exercise, whether you’re new to movement or a seasoned athlete, the right outfit, from your head to your toes, is going to make the experience easier, more comfortable and, perhaps, give you the boost you need to keep going.

This is where a good sports bra can either make or break your workout. You wouldn’t run a marathon in thongs or take a high-impact cardio class in stilettos; your breasts deserve the right amount of support just as much as your feet do (and if they don’t get it, they may end up where your feet are!)

First up, let’s address what a sports bra actually is. Sports bras are designed to minimise breast bounce – movement that not only hurts but can limit mobility and stretch ligaments no matter your cup size. The level of support needed will depend on your activity. Will you be running? High-impact cardio? Pilates? Yoga? Walking? The level of impact will determine the amount of support and the style of sports bra you need.

If ever there was a bra to get fitted, it’s your sports bra! The actual fitting process is identical to any other bra fitting, we help you find the sports bra that you feel supported, comfortable and ready to move in.

There are three main types of sports bras:

1. Those that encapsulate each breast separately – most often underwired and suitable for high-impact activity.

2. The crop top/compression style – mostly non-wired, that acts almost as a bandage around the breasts, compressing them closer to your chest wall to minimise movement.

3. A hybrid combination of both.

No matter which style you need, a sports bra with a wide underbust band, thick straps and cups that fully cover the breasts will offer the most support.

At Colleen’s Lingerie & Swimwear we have sports bras from brands Elomi, Freya, Wacoal, Amoena and Anita, ranging from A to K cups, for all levels of impact and, of course, sports bras suitable for those who wear a breast prosthesis.

Book your fitting today and let us help support you in your movement and wellbeing goals!
