Ciao, amici!

Canberra’s latest culinary offering is here. Amici Bar, on Northbourne Avenue, has opened its doors, serving up wine, cocktails and “grab and go” food – meat, cheese, antipasti, pizza and more. Amici, meaning ‘friends’ in Italian, has something for everyone – takeaway coffee, salads, sandwiches, ‘boozy brunches’, wine tastings, a corporate delivery program and a selection of no- and low-alcohol cocktails. It’s the latest venture from Canberra’s own Lala Hospitality Group, the team behind venues such as Molly, The Highball Express, Bleachers Sports Bar, Black Market and 88mph.

Amici Bar, 59 Northbourne Avenue, Canberra City. Open: Mon-Thurs 7am-10pm; Fri 7am-midnight; Saturday 11am-midnight.

Campaign to compost food waste

The ACT Greens have called on the ACT Government to expand the current green bin system to include food waste as well as garden waste. Greens MLA Caroline Le Couteur recently launched a new ‘compost not landfill’ campaign and talked about the advantages of composting food waste including soil improvement and reducing methane gas emissions. “Currently our green bin system only works for garden waste, which is great, but it would be even greater if it worked for food waste as well,” Ms Le Couteur said. “Every household has food waste, and not every household is in the position that they can compost it themselves. The Greens would like to see food waste going to compost, not landfill.” While she didn’t expect the ACT Government to say “no” to the proposal, it could take a while for it to be adopted.
