Food for thought: Canberra is third healthiest city in the world

The latest in foodie news, events, and products – including a podium place for Canberrans’ diet and lifestyle, and dining experiences to try for Enlighten and beyond.

Canberra is the third healthiest city worldwide, according to recent study

Canberra has made the Top 3 healthiest cities for 2022! The study from money.co.uk used new methodology this year, adding metrics that reflect what proved important throughout 2021.

As in the past, global cities were analysed according to seven factors of a healthy lifestyle: obesity levels, life expectancy, pollution levels, health care, safety, crime rate, and sunlight hours.

This year, additional factors included the number of psychiatrists and psychologists, nurses, and social workers per 100k population, current health expenditure, how many of the population has access to health support, and prevalence of substance use disorders.

Against this new methodology, Canberra climbed two places from last year! Not only are we one of the safest cities in the world, ranking seventh overall, our health care ranks third.

Adelaide and Brisbane also made the Top 20. We were beaten twice by Spain, with Valencia and Madrid taking first and second place. Following us was Lisbon, Tokyo, and Zurich – who had the lowest crime rate and highest safety score amongst all the cities.

Closing off the top 10 were Vienna, Chiang Mai in Thailand, Adelaide, and the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana.

Australia ranked 16th healthiest country in the world overall, with first and second place snagged by Japan and Switzerland respectively. Great work Canberrans for leading the way!

L’Americano espresso bar marks the spot

Did you know that on (and underneath) Bunda Street, on the north-west corner of Canberra Centre’s Monaro Mall, a swanky new espresso bar sits atop a giant basement of designer furniture?

CW Taste editor Anja de Rozario swung by L’Americano for some top-notch Italian and a browse through Coco Republic’s elegant home pieces.

Tried and tasted are their Prosciutto di San Daniele pizza, the house special Spaghetti allo Scoglio, and for dessert, the Basque burnt cheesecake.

Every dish was authentically scrumptious, particularly the crispy pizza base, and perfect for sharing. L’Americano is a location to keep in mind for a date you want to impress. While the ritzy chandeliers and walls decorated with Riva Aquarama model boats whisper wealth, the menu prices are surprisingly affordable.

After dessert, we descended the centre staircase to a spacious showroom of fabulously fancy furniture. Hello cloud couch and solid quartz coffee table!

L’Americano is open for lunch seven days a week and serves dinner from Tuesdays through to Saturdays.

Domino’s to raise ‘dough’ for flood affected communities

Domino’s stores across Queensland, NSW, and ACT donated $1 from every pizza sold on Wednesday 9 March to GIVIT’s Storms and Flooding Appeal, to support those impacted by the storms and heavy rainfall that caused flooding across both states.

The devastating flood events have left tens of thousands of homes and businesses damaged and without power. Currently, there are over 80,000 requests for support through GIVIT’s Storms and Flooding Appeal.

Domino’s Australia and New Zealand CEO David Burness said, “Domino’s is often the last kitchen to close during a natural disaster … we’re proud to have donated more than 2,000 pizzas to those affected by the Queensland and NSW floods so far, but we want to do more.”
