GIVIT Christmas appeal supports struggling businesses and vulnerable Canberrans

The online charity GIVIT has partnered with the ACT Government to create Christmas presents that support small businesses, the local economy, and help the community attend special Canberra events or experiences on their bucket list with the GIVIT Christmas Appeal.

The intention behind this one-of-a-kind appeal – which allows Canberrans to donate vouchers for local businesses and attractions – is to offer a range of different experiences from as many struggling local businesses as possible.

Donations through the appeal will mean those who may otherwise miss out this gifting season can have a fun day out at The National Zoo and Aquarium, Canberra Aqua Park, Canberra Miniature Railway, or simply go to the movies.

GIVIT ACT Engagement Coordinator, Kristi Clark said experiences or attractions, rather than material gifts, get people out into the community and help provide a sense of belonging.

“If you’re doing it tough, you might feel like you can’t belong because you don’t have the money to take part in the things that are happening,” Kristi said.

“Vouchers can also be used for volunteers or people struggling with mental health to get things like a massage or mani pedi, something super indulgent.

“After a year of challenge and disaster, it’s important our community members doing it tough get the opportunity to experience joy and fun this festive season.”

The appeal is still open to businesses who may want to register.

Assistant Minister for Families and Community Services Emma Davidson, who has responsibility for Community Recovery, said following a tough year for many, the Support CBR – Christmas Appeal was a great opportunity for Canberrans to practice their trademark community spirit and generosity this festive season.

“We know Canberrans look out for one another. Support CBR is an easy way for Canberrans to support local businesses and local families after such a tough and challenging year.

“Christmas is a time for kindness, generosity and connection and Support CBR is one-way Canberrans can make this a special time of year for all.”

GIVIT is a national online charity connecting those who want to give items, money or volunteer their time with over 250 charities and community groups across the ACT.
