New Aboriginal family service Yerrabi Yurwang receives government funding

More help will be available for Indigenous children and families in Canberra’s north-west. Yerrabi Yurwang, a newly established Aboriginal-led child and family service, has received $25,000 from the ACT Government to help with start-up costs.

The organisation will use the government funding to establish an Aboriginal Mothers’ Group; conduct two Yarn Ups to meet the community; and train board members.

Director Selina Walker said: “Yerrabi Yurwang is grateful for the support to establish an important service for our children and their families here in the ACT.”

Yerrabi Yurwang (“Walking Strong” in Ngunnawal language) was set up to build generations of strong and thriving Aboriginal children and families, Ms Walker said.

The funding comes under the ACT Government’s New and Emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Organisations Program (NEO Program), which financially supports new and emerging businesses and community organisations that develop and deliver culturally appropriate services to Indigenous people in the ACT.

“Yerrabi Yurwang certainly meets this brief,” Rachel Stephen-Smith, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, said, “seeking to provide family support and growing the service through partnerships to deliver access to housing, health services, early intervention, community, culture, legal and employment assistance.”

The NEO program, Ms Stephen-Smith said, showed the government’s commitment to Indigenous community organisations and businesses.
