Share the Dignity: It’s in the Bag
Share the Dignity, a charity helping women and girls in need, are asking for help to make this Christmas special for women in our communities experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or living in poverty. The charity is hosting their annual It’s in the Bag campaign and would love the community to donate a bag and drop off at collection boxes at Bunnings stores between Friday 20 November and Sunday 29 November. In 2019, Share the Dignity collected over 127,000 bags at Bunnings stores nationally. Share the Dignity works with over 2,600 charities and this year the requests for help are sitting at over 100,000 to date. The It’s in the Bag campaign has a simple premise and is easy to take part in: Donate a handbag in good, used condition that you no longer use or a new one; Fill it with items that will make a difference to the daily life of a woman or girl in need; Include the essentials such as period products, roll-on deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner and soap; Add little luxuries such as a new lipstick, a hairbrush, hair ties, a gift card or a notebook and pen; Add a finishing touch to the bag such as a thoughtful note or Christmas card that shows someone cares. Once bags are complete, they can be dropped off to the collection box at your local Bunnings between 20-29 November. Share the Dignity volunteers will then collect the bags and distribute these to registered charities ensuring that these wonderful gifts are received in time for Christmas. 2020 has been a difficult year for many Australians due to the impacts of COVID-19. Burra Car Boot Sale
Burra Community Association (BCA) is holding a communal car boot sale at Burra Park (corner of Lagoon and Burra Rds, Burra) on the Garage Sale Trailon Sunday 22 November 9am-12pm. Pet Santa pictures
The Animal Referral Hospital in Fyshwick will host Pet Santa Pictures on Saturday 28 November 9am-2pm. Cost: $15 cash only which includes an instant photo, pet treat and access to a digital copy. All proceeds go to the greyhound rescue organisations of Canberra. No bookings needed, just show up. Photos will be set up out the front in a gazebo with dog fencing, however, the safety of cats cannot be guaranteed due to being outside so owners must hold their own cat in picture. Humans are welcome in photo but won’t be able to sit on Santa’s chair.
VIEW Club meetings
Gungahlin Day will hold their final meeting for 2020 on Wednesday 25 November 11.30am at Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club, Nicholls. Two-course lunch $35. A Christmas themed trading table will be available and members are invited to bring along items for purchase. The Brite Notes will provide a Christmas themed singalong. With One Voice Gungahlin community choir
With One Voice Gungahlin (On Common Ground) is a newly created community choir which is part of the With One Voice movement. Led by well-known Canberra conductor Rodney Clancy, the choir will be hosting two workshops, on Wednesday 25 November and 2 December 7-8.30pm, for the community to come and experience the joy of singing together, before launching weekly rehearsals in January 2021. $15 per person; bookings via Eventbrite. Knits N Bits craft groups
A group of like-minded CIT students who are studying Community Development/Community Services, Mental Health, Alcohol and Drugs and/or Youth Work have created a series of
sewing/knitting/crochet/craft sessions to share with other like-minded individuals to improve community connectedness following COVID restrictions. Sessions take place at the Mura Community and Youth Centre in Lanyon on Tuesdays 2-4pm and Wednesdays 6-8pm. They provide an opportunity to get to know other people in the community, form relationships, have a cuppa and a chat, learn new skills and hopefully make lasting friendships. Open to all ages, genders, ethnicities, beliefs and skill levels. Supplies are available for most hand sewing projects and the group have the skills to teach most crafts, so not knowing how to knit, sew or crochet is not a barrier.
