How to create your own garden getaway

More and more work-from-home professionals are using their own backyard for R&R, and building a garden getaway is the latest trend that’s taking Australia by storm.

You don’t need a large estate to create your own staycation garden. These tips will show you how to have your private oasis with just a few tricks and a lot of imagination.

Prepare your backyard

Start by preparing the spot where you’ll make your backyard sanctuary.

Prune away brown or sick leaves. Remove dried leaves and other debris from your yard.

If you don’t have the time to do this, you can hire professional gardeners for a stress-free yard clean up. They can cover anything from removing weeds to tidying up your backyard.

Decorate with colourful garden furniture

Set up your lounging spot by installing a colourful hammock. Place it in a cool area in your backyard, preferably near a tree with plenty of shade.

Create a space for entertaining by adding a wicker bistro set. A bistro set in sunny yellow or turquoise will instantly brighten up your space.

Put benches under shaded areas for resting. You can have your outdoor furniture spray-painted in your preferred colour for a unique look.

Add potted plants

Arrange shrubs like frangipani or jasmine near your lounging spot. These plants will fill your garden with a lovely fragrance and create a relaxing ambience.

Add planters filled with colourful flowering plants such as azaleas or hydrangeas.

When choosing planters for your garden, be sure to pick a design that complements the look you’re going for. Colourful wooden planters will give your garden getaway a rustic feel, while matte black planters are perfect for a zen theme.

Suspend hanging plants on a trellis for a magical atmosphere.

Make your garden look lush by filling in sparse areas with low-maintenance plants. Ajuga is an attractive groundcover that grows well under shade. Aloe vera is an impossible-to-kill succulent that will look good as an accent plant because of its structure.

For some privacy, arrange potted Japanese hedge bamboo near your hammock. These natural privacy screens give a tranquil vibe to your garden and are more attractive to look at than steel screens.

Accent your sanctuary with miniature citrus trees. Dwarf lime, orange, or lemon trees add a splash of colour and release a fresh citrusy scent into the air.

Spruce up your garden getaway

Install outdoor string lights to give your garden getaway a warm glow at night.

To tie the whole look together, set up solar-powered lamps near your bistro set and benches. Add lights along the pathway for some ambient lighting
