How to do it yourself, whilst being yourself: Canberra TikTok Star ready to release EP

Local TikTok star and independent music artist, Avneesha, is pioneering her way forward in the digital world with the motto “how to do it yourself, whilst being yourself”.

The triple threat actor, singer and comedian is releasing her first EP, Too Many Feels on Thursday 4 March, after reaching just over one million followers on TikTok.

Avneesha started posting on the social media app when she decided she wanted to release her original, solo music and create her artist’s profile.

“I saw TikTok and it seemed like a lot of fun. I’ve also done acting for years so I thought it would be an awesome thing to do some funny sketches and what not,” she said.

“I didn’t think much of it; I thought it was going to be a fun thing and then one video just went crazy and I wasn’t sure if they were laughing at me or with me.”

The mix of skits, music and songs caught the attention of people all over the world, earning her over 20 million likes and inspiring her to continue to act and release her original music.

According to TikTok’s first yearly report, over 176 different songs surpassed 1 billion video views as TikTok sounds; becoming a go-to platform for music discovery, as well as a launching pad for smash hits by artists of all genres. For Avneesha, using the app to perform made her realise anything is possible.

“I realised if I just show up and put myself out there and do what I love, eventually people will find me as long as I’m authentic. That made me realise with the music stuff, I could do this too. This is what I have always wanted to do.”

Her EP, Too Many Feels is a mix of rock and alternative RnB, with her main inspiration coming from artist like The Weeknd, Drake, Juice Wrld and 070 Shake.

“I find I write a lot of love songs but sad love songs, they’re so easy to write … I think because they have that common thread of having a lot of feelings, we came up with the concept of Too Many Feels and having it as a five-song EP.

“I think for us it was about creating that concept of being in your emotions.”

According to Avneesha, people can expect “a cool soundscape” from the EP.

“Some of the songs are different to what I’ve put out originally … That’s what I’m most excited about, is putting something new and fresh out there that I haven’t done before, and I challenged myself. Hopefully, people hear that.”

Avneesha proudly describes herself as a Canberra local, filming all her TikToks and music videos in the Nation’s Capital with the help of her husband and friends. She said the Canberra TikTok and music community is small but growing.

“I know there’s a lot of other artists in Canberra that are doing the music stuff and I’m trying to reach out and connect with them,” she said.

“I feel like Canberra has so much to offer.”

Too Many Feels is the first of many steps for Avneesha and as she continues to build her career, she hopes to keep doing it herself, whilst being herself.

“For me, especially right now in the social media world we live in, a lot of it is has to do with how you look and how you present yourself,” she said.

“A really strong message that I want to hit home is not being scared to do what you love. If that means doing five different things that are worlds apart, it’s just being confident enough to show that and be that.”

Too Many Feels will be availablethrough all streaming platforms from 4 March.
