Australia’s very last serial numbered Holden – a 2017 VF Series II SSV Redline – sold for three quarters of a million at auction over the weekend, about the same sum as the median ACT house price which is currently $760,000.
This result did not come out of the blue; before auction, experts suggested the red Commodore would bring in a “strong six figure result”.
An avid Holden collector from the east coast of Australia was the successful bidder, according to a spokesperson from Lloyd’s Auctions.
Symbolising the end of an era, the auction listing assured potential buyers that owning the last homegrown Holden was like “owning the holy grail of car manufacturing in Australia”.
But the coveted Commodore wasn’t the most expensive vehicle to go under the hammer on Saturday, with a 2017 Holden HSV GTSR W1 Maloo Ute selling for an astonishing $1,050,000.
This result broke the record for Australia’s most expensive road registerable muscle car, and Lloyds Auctions CEO Lee Hames said it was a competitive bidding war.
“There were three bidders that bid over $1,000,000 on the Maloo Ute with two of them being Holden enthusiasts; however, the winning bidder is a group specialising in raffling off unique cars, so I don’t think it will be the last time we see this car,” he said.
“What an incredible auction to experience, we are very humbled to have auctioned both of these iconic cars breaking Australian records.”
Mr Lloyd said the two new owners were extremely excited by the day’s outcome, emerging as the successful bidders from a four-hour auction.
