Canberra’s ‘networking queen’ Misty Henkel is on a mission to highlight Canberra’s businesses and break a world record.
Ms Henkel is running The World’s Biggest Networking Event on Friday 30 August with the aim to break the Guinness World Record for the most people attending a business speed-networking event at a single location. The current record stands at 1,068 people achieved in Belgium in 2014.
Tristan MacManus from Dancing with the Stars will emcee the event while keynote speaker is Glenn Keys from Aspen Medical.
Ms Henkel is hoping to attract 2,000 people to the event, which she said will be a great opportunity for people to dip their toes into the world of networking.
In particular, as this is a speed-networking event, she said it will teach people “how to say your name, what you do and ask the other person the same thing”.
More broadly though, Ms Henkel said when it comes to networking people should: always come out with around 40 business cards; plan to speak to at least three people when you go to any networking event; and always swap/ collect at least three cards before you leave.
The World’s Biggest Networking Event is on Friday 30 August 5.30pm at the Ann Harding Conference Centre, University of Canberra. Tickets: $35 single; $5 from every ticket sold by 14 August will be donated to UC Rotaract Club.
Dunne to depart
The Canberra Liberals’ Vicki Dunne has announced she will not be seeking re-election in October 2020 but intends to serve out her full term.
In a statement on Wednesday 24 July, Mrs Dunne said that after five continuous terms and 19 years as a Member for Ginninderra in the Legislative Assembly, “the forthcoming election is an appropriate time to depart”.
Celebrate ACT exports
Canberra businesses are being reminded to get their nominations in for the 2019 ACT Export Awards, with the closing date for applications now Friday 9 August.
Experts from the Canberra Business Chamber (CBC) can help interested businesses develop a submission that doesn’t take too much time, but does tell the story of their hard work and achievements.
“Time is running out to enter, though,” CBC CEO Dr Michael Schaper said. “Any interested businesses should get in touch with us on 6247 4199 as soon as possible.”
There are 15 categories covering every industry sector and business type, and applications are submitted online via exportawards.gov.au
Peace Bell set to toll
The Canberra Peace Bell will ring out on Tuesday 6 August to remember the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
It is 74 years since the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima at 8.15am Japan time. A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945. The special ringing is being held at 9am on Tuesday 6 August at the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell, Flynn Drive, Yarralumla. The event is being conducted in association with the Australian Japan Society and is open to all.
