New and bigger schools announced for Canberra

The ACT Government will modernise and expand Majura Primary School by up to 300 places, as growth in the Canberra region increases demand.

“More and more families are choosing public schools for their children’s education in the ACT, and we’ve been seeing that play out in the Inner North,” education minister Yvette Berry said.

A new P-6 primary school will be built in Whitlam, in the Molonglo Valley, with capacity for up to 800 primary school students, and an Early Childhood Education Centre with a 130-place capacity.

Molonglo’s third public school is scheduled to be open in time for the 2025 school year. Design and planning work on the new school continues.

“As we’ve seen when other new schools like Throsby and Evelyn Scott have opened in recent years, there is something special about when a school opens its doors to students and families for the first time,” Ms Berry said. “The residents of Whitlam will get to experience that special feeling in early 2025.”

As Canberra grows, the government will also increase school capacity by installing three new Modular Learning Centres (MLCs), and re-using eight existing MLCs, across ACT public schools to meet projected enrolment growth and classroom needs.

“MLCs give us important flexibility across the system, and allows us to further meet demand where they are needed,” Ms Berry said.

This initiative builds on the 22 MLCs across 18 schools funded through the 2021-22 Budget and the August 2020 Economic and Fiscal Update.

Ms Berry said the ACT Government was committed to providing every family with access to a great local public school.
