New community engagement program in ACT suburbs

Residents in Page and Richardson can submit ideas to improve community wellbeing in their suburbs as part of a new initiative from the ACT Government.

The “My little big idea” pilot program aims to involve the community in the decision-making process.  Up to $40,000 is available per suburb.

All ideas for improvements will be considered, and one winning idea per suburb will receive funding to turn it into reality.

Potential ideas could include a street library, fitness or cooking classes, a playgroup, event, or series of activities.

A community panel and a public vote will have the final say on which idea will receive funding.

The winning projects will be funded and implemented in 2024.

The “My little big idea” initiative will investigate how Canberrans can help governments decide how to support their communities.

It will also build on previous programs inviting input from Canberrans on what is needed in their suburb and explore how participatory approaches can be used alongside budget consultation processes.

To be eligible for funding, each project idea needs to align with the key goal of ‘making your community more connected and resilient’ and must be accessible to a range of community members and stakeholders. Criteria and a submission guide are available to help guide the community through the process.

To learn more about this initiative, submit an idea or join a community panel, visit www.yoursay.act.gov.au.

This initiative to encourage neighbourhood democracy is a commitment under the 10th Parliamentary and Governing Agreement. “The Government will commence a pilot of Neighbourhood Democracy projects in five suburbs across all regions of Canberra, using participatory budgeting to determine local expenditure, improving local community connections and resilience, and will include a published evaluation of the program.”
