Not-for-profit funeral services to open in Canberra

A not-for-profit organisation that offers affordable, personalised funeral services, Tender Funerals will open a new facility in Fairbairn, thanks to a collaborative partnership with The Snow Foundation and Capital Airport Group.

Tender Funerals’ new site in Canberra will feature comprehensive facilities, including two arrangement rooms, viewing or vigil rooms, wash and dress rooms, a mortuary, and a community space for workshops and ceremonies, all designed to empower families to understand their end-of-life and funeral options.

Founded on the principle of compassion, Tender Funerals supports families to make informed choices and participate actively in the care and remembrance of their loved ones.

According to Catherine Prosser, General Manager of Tender Funerals Canberra Region, “at Tender, our goal is to ensure that families feel supported and empowered to make choices that reflect their values and needs when someone dies”.

“We believe in active participation and transparency, offering services that truly cater to the wishes of the families and individuals we serve. This approach not only honours the deceased but also fosters a healthy grieving process,” Ms Prosser said.

“We are very proud of and grateful for our relationship with The Snow Foundation and the Capital Airport Group who have been actively supporting us, far beyond simply providing a grant.”

The Snow Foundation and Capital Airport Group have played instrumental roles in bringing Tender Funerals to the region.

There from the beginning, three years ago, The Snow Foundation provided the initial seed funding to do a feasibility study and help find the right site and have since committed funding of $1 million, inclusive of a $750,000 grant and a $250,000 loan, and together formed a significant partnership with Capital Airport Group, which is providing pro bono resourcing. The collaboration has ensured that Tender Funerals can establish a home here in Canberra.

“In our support for Tender Funerals, we see an opportunity to address the needs of grieving Canberrans in innovative and caring ways,” said The Snow Foundation’s Georgina Byron. “This partnership reflects our commitment to making a real difference in the lives of those experiencing loss in our region, ensuring they have access to services that respect their needs and circumstances.

“The involvement of Capital Airport Group, particularly in identifying and supplying the new site at Fairbairn, and project managing the fit-out for specific requirements, highlights our family’s collective effort to support community initiatives that make a meaningful impact.”

Ms Byron said the new facility not only represented a significant advancement in funeral care options for the Canberra region but also embodied the spirit of community and compassion that Tender Funerals, The Snow Foundation, and Capital Airport Group stand for.

Tender Funerals Canberra Region is one of the nominated charities for Hands Across Canberra’s annual Canberra Day Appeal. Canberrans can show their support for not-for-profit, affordable, meaningful funerals by donating at giving.handsacrosscanberra.org.au/event/tender-funerals
