Calling all geeks, freaks, nerds, and pop culture enthusiasts! For the very first time, Oz Comic-Con will be hosting a Canberra based event with a weekend of shenanigans at Exhibition Park on 27-28 August.
The homegrown format will feature both internationally acclaimed celebrities as well as state and territory based up-and-comers. Daniel Gillies, known best for his roles in the Vampire Diaries, The Originals and Spider-Man 2 has signed on to appear at the event, as has Bernard Curry known for Wentworth, Pretty Little Liars and Once Upon a Time – with more television and movie personalities to be announced.
A whole gang of Australian comic book writers and authors will be there including Andrew Constant, a writer at DC Comics known for writing Nightwing and novel, The Demon: Hell is Earth. British-Australian supernatural thriller author Alan Baxter is also set to make an appearance along with a list of authors that is still growing.
The homegrown event features all the frills Comic-Con is famous for with a focus on Australia’s contribution to the entertainment industry. The main stage will host a Cosplay competition and parade and acclaimed guests in Q&A panels, while a community and workshop stage will showcase community talents catering to a wide range of areas like cosplay, drawing and craft to photography and editing.
Take a stroll down artist alley and see an incredible range of original and fan art, shop the stalls, and pick up some pop culture goodies to take home.
Who doesn’t love to dress up? There isn’t a better place to do it than at a Comic-Con convention. Competitions, parades, photographers and more will be available for you to show off your look. Join one of the meet-ups to meet like-minded fans or get some tips on how to best bring your character to life.
If you want to get more interactive during your visit, check out the gaming zone and e-sports tournaments where you can battle your buddies in the latest games and products. Step back to the days of arguing with your sibling over who gets to play as the best characters in Mortal Combat (Sub-zero, obviously) in the retro gaming lounge. Nintendo 64, Sega Mega Drive and old school PlayStation are some of the consoles available for your playing pleasure.
That’s not all the games on offer; a whole library of tabletop games can cater to any gamer, while the Just Dance stage will encourage attendees to show off their best moves.
Step outside and get a taste of the action in real life when live action roleplay group, the Wargrounds Canberra, host live demonstrations and tutorials.
Joining forces with the Australian Esports League and Geek Markets, Oz Comic-Con Homegrown Canberra is set to be the pop culture event of the season.
