A 20-year-old driver who drove recklessly following a fail to stop incident in Lyneham yesterday, Wednesday 15 April, will face the ACT Magistrates Court today on multiple charges.
About 10am yesterday, police observed a SAAB 93 sedan come to a halt past the stop line at the intersection of Ellenborough Street and Ginninderra Drive, Lyneham. The vehicle’s front number plate was hanging off and it had no rear number plate.
Police will allege the driver of the SAAB was seen using a mobile phone, and when instructed by police to pull over he drove through a red light into Mouat Street. At one stage he crossed into the path of oncoming traffic before turning on to Northbourne Avenue.
About 11.50pm, police located the vehicle at a Downer residence, where it was seized and the man was arrested.
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said the actions of this driver were reckless and could have resulted in tragic consequences.
“This driver was gambling with his life, and that of other road users, and that is unacceptable at any time. It’s largely down to luck that nobody was seriously injured due to this dangerous behaviour. Driving like this man did put lives at risk,” Detective Station Sergeant Boorman said.
“This month, ACT Policing Traffic Operations is focusing on the most common causes of death on Canberra’s roads. This driver will have to answer to the court for multiple traffic-related offences including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and failing to stop for police.
“The message is clear, if you fail to stop for police and place other road users at risk, eventually you will be apprehended and held to account.”
The man will face court for failing to stop for police, driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, using a number plate not properly issued, not obeying a police direction and breach of good behaviour obligations.
