Reunited after rescue

A mother and son who were rescued from a serious motor vehicle incident have been reunited with firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSWโ€™s (FRNSW) Braidwood Fire Station.

On Tuesday 19 December 2017,Alanna Davis and her son Thomas โ€˜TJโ€™ Campagna were travelling on the Kings Highway, when a car collided with their vehicle.

FRNSW crews from Braidwood and Queanbeyan removed the pair from the car. TJ suffered a perforated bowel, broken ribs and a collapsed lung, and was airlifted to hospital.

โ€œI canโ€™t thank the firefighters who helped us enough; they are part of the reason why TJ is still alive today,โ€ Ms Davis said.

โ€œItโ€™s wonderful to meet them again and thank them personally for assisting us.

โ€œOnce I was removed from the car, one of the local crew stayed with me throughout the ordeal and kept me occupied while TJ was receiving assistance,โ€ she said.

โ€œIt was really hard for me not to be able to provide any support to TJ while I was still trapped in the car and incredibly distressing not to be able to travel to hospital with him.โ€

Ms Davis sent a letter to the firefighters after her and TJโ€™s recovery, thanking them for their assistance.

โ€œIt canโ€™t have been easy for the firefighters and they did a wonderful job.โ€

Deputy Captain Hockey said he was โ€œhonouredโ€™ when Ms Davis reached out to the crew.

โ€œWe are trained and prepared for anything, ready to help anyone, anywhere, anytime,โ€ he said.

โ€œAs a rescue station, we are often one of the first on the scene at these types of incidents.

โ€œYou do, however, wonder sometimes how those you help are after the fact and it was wonderful to see Ms Davis and TJ again.โ€

โ€œFRNSW firefighters do much more than fight fires; they are trained and ready to respond to a range of rescue situations,โ€ said FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter.

โ€œAs our communityโ€™s needs change, our services are also changing and diversifying to ensure we are ready to respond and protect the irreplaceable,โ€ he said.

โ€œThe Braidwood crew is a highly experienced rescue station and Iโ€™m pleased they were able to assist Ms Davis and her family on this occasion.โ€
