Reunited after rescue

A mother and son who were rescued from a serious motor vehicle incident have been reunited with firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW’s (FRNSW) Braidwood Fire Station.

On Tuesday 19 December 2017,Alanna Davis and her son Thomas ‘TJ’ Campagna were travelling on the Kings Highway, when a car collided with their vehicle.

FRNSW crews from Braidwood and Queanbeyan removed the pair from the car. TJ suffered a perforated bowel, broken ribs and a collapsed lung, and was airlifted to hospital.

“I can’t thank the firefighters who helped us enough; they are part of the reason why TJ is still alive today,” Ms Davis said.

“It’s wonderful to meet them again and thank them personally for assisting us.

“Once I was removed from the car, one of the local crew stayed with me throughout the ordeal and kept me occupied while TJ was receiving assistance,” she said.

“It was really hard for me not to be able to provide any support to TJ while I was still trapped in the car and incredibly distressing not to be able to travel to hospital with him.”

Ms Davis sent a letter to the firefighters after her and TJ’s recovery, thanking them for their assistance.

“It can’t have been easy for the firefighters and they did a wonderful job.”

Deputy Captain Hockey said he was “honoured’ when Ms Davis reached out to the crew.

“We are trained and prepared for anything, ready to help anyone, anywhere, anytime,” he said.

“As a rescue station, we are often one of the first on the scene at these types of incidents.

“You do, however, wonder sometimes how those you help are after the fact and it was wonderful to see Ms Davis and TJ again.”

“FRNSW firefighters do much more than fight fires; they are trained and ready to respond to a range of rescue situations,” said FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter.

“As our community’s needs change, our services are also changing and diversifying to ensure we are ready to respond and protect the irreplaceable,” he said.

“The Braidwood crew is a highly experienced rescue station and I’m pleased they were able to assist Ms Davis and her family on this occasion.”
