Goodwin – Proud to be extraordinary
In 1954, a group of forward-thinking women known as the National Council of Women, had a great idea – to set up housing for older members of the Canberra community. A committee of community leaders was formed to bring it to life. The group called itself the Goodwin Centre Development Committee, named to honour Lt Col John Goodwin, a tireless advocate for the needs of the growing Canberra community.
Since then, Goodwin has grown to become Canberra’s most trusted provider of aged care services and accommodation.
From independent retirement living communities and social day clubs, to home care services and residential care, we provide the full spectrum of services to meet your needs, whether it’s just a person to chat to, some light exercise or 24/7 high care.
We’re not-for-profit and owned by our members, most of whom are Goodwin residents. We’re also fiercely independent, not affiliated with any other business, property developer, political or religious body. We’re just here to offer the best services possible.
Whatever stage you’re at in your retirement or aged care journey, talk to us. We’re here to help.
Age well with Canberra Audiology
Keeping fit and healthy as you get older is very important, however, many people don’t consider their hearing as having an important impact on ageing well.
“There is a growing wealth of evidence showing that improving your hearing can help cognitively, socially, emotionally and even physically1,” says Kimberley Gordon, Canberra Audiology.
Cognitively – Hearing aids have been linked with improved memory and delayed dementia onset3.
Socio-Emotionally – Connecting with others effectively has been shown to improve your relationships, emotional welfare and quality-of-life.2
Physically – Hearing well can reduce the risk of falls4
Canberra Audiology’s university-qualified audiologists are specialists in providing hearing solutions in a caring, family-centred clinic. Their aim is to address clients’ hearing concerns so that they can thrive mentally, emotionally and enjoy the fun activities in life.

Have you considered your super in your Will?
According to Tanya Herbertson, Partner at Meyer Vandenberg, superannuation death benefit disputes are becoming more and more common.
“These days people are living longer, sometimes having multiple relationships and blended families,” she says. “Often the sums involved in superannuation death benefits are significant, particularly when there is also a life insurance component – so this is the driving motivation behind disputes.”
These disputes can be avoided, however, with comprehensive estate planning that incorporates superannuation benefits. “Establishing ‘dependence’ or ‘interdependence’ is often a crucial issue in these types of cases,” says Tanya. “That’s why you really need someone who understands the complexities in estate planning so that all your assets are distributed according to your wishes.”
