Six simple ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with who you love

As the hustle and bustle of the world’s most loved-up day approaches, it is important to remember that the love you celebrate on Valentine’s Day can come in many different forms, from romantic or platonic to familial or self.

Below are six easy ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Canberra, whether by yourself or with family, friends or a partner.

1. Go on a picnic

Canberra is full of beautiful picnic spots. Take some refreshments, a picnic blanket and a book to Nara Peace Park to enjoy the lake, surround yourself with giant trees at the National Arboretum Canberra or head to the Australian National Botanic Gardens to spend time with the family among an array of native plants.

2. Make breakfast in bed

Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, making it the perfect day to spoil yourself and others to breakfast in bed. Grab an apron, make some chocolate chip pancakes or stick to the classic bacon and eggs for something savoury. Leave the cleaning up for later, enjoy bundling up in the sheets and watch the world go by.

3. Watch a movie

Watching a movie with a loved one is always fun but taking the day to binge-watch your favourites will make it unforgettable. Grab some popcorn and turn the movies romantic with Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet or show the kids some fun and family love with Disney’s Lilo and Stitch.

4. Cook up a storm

The way to the heart is through the stomach and cooking is a great way to spend time with the people you love. Plan a four-course meal with your friends or family or cook yourself your favourite meal. Your stomach and heart will thank you.

5. Get creative

Release your inner artist and write your partner a poem, paint a picture or just take some time to doodle. You might not discover you have a secret artistic talent, but it is sure to give everyone a smile.

6. Have a blast in the backyard

Set up some chairs and enjoy your backyard or balcony as the sun goes down. Craft an outside bar, grab some pillows, and watch the stars come out or play some games to get the blood pumping. Even your furry friends can join in!
