The first sod has been turned at Canberra’s new development of Jacka in Gungahlin, set to be one of Australia’s most sustainable suburbs.
The construction program for the residential estate begins this month and is expected to be completed in mid-2024.
The greenfield development will feature approximately 700 single residential multi-unit homes and commercial opportunities, according to the ACT Government.
The first blocks for the next stage will be offered for land release in 2022-23 as part of the Indicative Land Release Program.
ACT Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry said the government is planning more land to be available over the next five years “than ever before”.
“With the ACT’s population set to reach 500,000 by the end of this decade, the government is planning for an increase of around 30,000 dwellings in the ACT over the next five years,” Ms Berry said.
“This will increase the total housing supply in Canberra from around 180,000 dwellings to around 210,000 dwellings.”
First developed in 2013, Jacka is currently home to just over 700 residents.
“Building Jacka – one of Canberra’s newest suburbs – as an all-electric, solar-powered suburb, will save residents money and set the example of how our future suburbs will be powered,” Ms Berry said.
