Speeding, unlicensed drivers caught on ACT roads in morning blitzes

A BMW driver caught driving at 125km/h in an 80 zone is among multiple Canberra road users nabbed during early morning speed enforcement activities conducted by ACT Road Policing officers this week.ย ย 

On Tuesday morning, 19 July, officers were conducting speed enforcement activities on the Monaro Highway, Hume, when a Honda motorcycle was detected travelling at 104km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Checks confirmed the man was riding with an expired learnerโ€™s licence and had not reported his change of address to the RTA.ย  He was issued cautions and infringement notices totaling $1854 and 3 demerit points.ย 

In the early hours of yesterdayย morning, Wednesday 20 July, officers conducted enforcement activity on the Barton Highway, Monaro Highway and Isabella Drive where they issued a number of Traffic Infringement Notices including:ย ย 

  • 6 TINs for speeding between 15 and 30 km/h in excess of the speed limit,ย ย 
  • 1 caution for not being able to produce a driver’s licence,ย ย 
  • 1 caution for driving uninsured,ย ย 
  • 1 TIN for driving an unregistered vehicle,ย ย 
  • 1 TIN for driving unlicensed, andย ย 
  • 1 TIN for failing to notify the RTA of a change in address.ย ย 

Police also conducted seven random breath tests with no drink drivers identified.ย ย 

One driver was stopped by officers for driving at 125km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Barton Highway, Crace. The BMW driver told officers that he was โ€œrunning late to workโ€. Police issued a Traffic Infringement Notice for exceeding the speed limit between 30 km/h and 45 km/h resulting in a $700 fine and 4 demerit points.  

Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson says that there is no excuse for speeding or ignoring road rules.  

โ€œDrivers can expect to be stopped anywhere and at any time when they are doing the wrong thing on our roads,โ€ acting Inspector Hutcheson said.  

โ€œSpeeding remains one of theย โ€œfatal fiveโ€ contributors to serious and fatal road collisions. We urge each and every driver to consider the risk they are placing themselves and other road users at, when they speed.โ€ย
