Sydney Building property in Civic sells for $1.125 million

Sold under the hammer for $1.125 million in Canberra’s Sydney Building is a property where the Church of Scientology leases the first floor.

The property was sold to Canberran businessman Phillip Keir who already owns the popular Verity Lane and a handful of additional properties in the same building.

The Alinga Street property comprises of two tenancies across two levels. The Church of Scientology leases the first floor and the ground floor is currently vacant.

106 Alinga Street was brought to market by Ray White Commercial Canberra agent Steven Shang. Two registered bidders were at the auction and both buyers bid for the property.

“The winning bid went to an owner occupier, Phill, who already owns a few properties in the same building,” Mr Shang said.

“Verity Lane Market is an upmarket food hall including six food outlets and a bar. Phill also runs a wine bar and an adjoining pub.

“He purchased the property to potentially use as an extension of the pub.”

Mr Shang said the building is a historic piece of Civic.

“The Sydney and Melbourne buildings are Civic’s key landmark buildings, framing the gateway to Northbourne Avenue and City Hill,” he said.

“Constructed between 1926 and 1946, the buildings were designed as the city’s premier ‘retail trader’s block’. The buildings defined the early character of Civic and continue to contribute to the urban realm experience of Civic today.”
