That’s art and entertainment: Film, stage and page

CW brings you the latest in arts and entertainment news from around the Canberra region. Highlights this week include a film festival, a stage production, and a new novel by a local author.

Fantasy and female empowerment

Canberra author Tanya Davies has published her second novel, Then Eve, which follows 16-year-old Bridgit who lives in Glastonbury, King Arthurs long-suspected resting place. Inspired by Celtic tales, the fantasy novel follows the teen through a journey of grieving, navigating spirituality and empowerment as she discovers she is a powerful healer and seer.

Having experienced domestic violence and raising two children as a single mother, the author says she wants to empower young women through her writing; sharing stories where women take control are as important now as ever, with women still fighting for the right to control their bodies.

More mice in the trap

In an exciting announcement, rising theatre star Katherine Pearson has been cast in Agatha Christieโ€™s The Mousetrap for the Canberra season, at Canberra Theatre Centre on 11-21 May.

Ms Pearson joins the star-studded cast in the role of Miss Casewell for the Canberra, Parramatta and Brisbane shows. Trapped in a manor during a snowstorm, seven strangers must uncover who the murderer is before anyone else meets their untimely end.

The longest-running play in the world with more than 28,500 shows, audiences are asked to not reveal the ending when they leave the theatre. The murder mystery celebrates 70 years of keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.

German Film Fest hits Canberra

Palace Electric Cinema continues to play host to the finest in foreign films when the German Film Festival screens from 3 to 24 May.

This yearโ€™s program features 33 films selected from Germany and its German-speaking neighbours, Austria and Switzerland, with some works picked from the Berlin Film Festival. The 2023 season has a strong focus on women in filmmaking and the power of music.

Films include comedies, documentaries, dramas and thrillers, plus some family-friendly screenings for viewers of all ages. Opening the festival is A Thousand Lines (Tausend Zeilen), a thought-provoking drama based on the 2018 fake news scandal that involved a Der Spiegel journalist.
