Time capsules dug up at Mount Rogers Primary School in Melba

More than 30 years ago, in December 1990, staff and students at Mount Rogers Primary School, Melba, buried two time capsules in their front garden.

This week, today’s staff and students spent a day digging up the capsules. They were opened in the presence of ACT education minister Yvette Berry to get a glimpse into the past and celebrate the school’s 50th birthday.

The time capsules contained original uniforms from when the school opened in 1973, newsletters, board reports, ‘Mighty Melba’ badges, photos, and school magazines.

“Wonderful memories of that period,” Ms Berry said.

The Mount Rogers Primary School community will bury new time capsules at the end of the year. Every student and class will add an item.

Mount Rogers opened in 1973; the same year the ACT public school system was created.

“And, like our ACT public schools system, many thousands of students have passed through this school and received a high-quality public education over the last 50 years,” Ms Berry said.

“My congratulations go out to all the teachers, students, and families who have made this school community so vibrant over the years. I look forward to hearing many more stories out of Mount Rogers in the years to come.”
