ACT Policing are calling on a potential witness to a head-on collision in Hawker this morning, who is said to have narrowly avoided the crash.
Sergeant Stephen Booth is asking the driver of a black 4WD/SUV to contact police after veering off the road and narrowly missing the sedan which collided with the car behind it.
“The driver was driving ahead of one of the vehicles involved, that is in the southbound lanes of William Hovell Drive, and has been identified as narrowly avoiding the northbound vehicle,” he said.
“We are hoping that driver might be able to shed some light on the circumstances leading to the crash.
“The vehicle has clearly travelled off the road to avoid the collision, so that driver will have known that something has occurred, and we are hoping they can assist us with our investigation.”
Sergeant Booth made it very clear there was no indication the driver had done anything wrong but could aid in the investigation.
ACT Policing Detective Acting Superintendent Marcus Boorman this morning said it took emergency services in excess of one and a half hours to remove one female and one male driver from each vehicle on William Hovell Drive before taking them to hospital.
The road was closed between Drake Brockman Drive to the north and Coppins Crossing Road to the south for several hours while the major collision team handled their investigations into why one vehicle veered onto the wrong side of the road.
“What we do know is the vehicles were driving from opposing ends of the roadway; one vehicle has crossed to the incorrect side into the other vehicle,” Detective Acting Superintendent Boorman said.
“It is a very traumatic scene and police provided escorts to both ambulances to the hospital.”
Also this morning, at about 10.20am, ACT Policing responded to a report on Anketell Street, Greenway, where a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
The pedestrian struck in Greenway was assessed by ACT Ambulance services at the scene, before being taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Detective Acting Superintendent Boorman said both collisions served as a reminder to ACT road users.
“This collision serves as a reminder to both drivers and pedestrians that, even in low-speed areas, you need to pay attention to what you’re doing as you are responsible for your own safety, and that of other road users,” he said.
Anyone who witnessed either collision and has not yet spoken to police, or who has video or dash-cam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
