ACT school zones back in action

Drivers are reminded school zone speed limits have come back into effect from 8am today, Monday 12 October, as Term 4 begins.

The 40km/h speed limits apply in all school zone areas from 8am to 4pm on all weekdays across the ACT.

Road Policing Detective Acting Superintendent Marcus Boorman said it was important for motorists to slow down and be alert while driving through school zones.

“Children are our most vulnerable road users, they can be unpredictable around traffic and are not always aware of road safety,” he said.

“This is why the 40km/h school zones are necessary to ensure the safety of our children.”

Access Canberra will also be working to ensure the school communities remain supported and safe and will have mobile speed cameras in operation.

Detective Boorman also reminded Canberrans that ACT Policing would be out in full force as school zones come back into effect.

“ACT Policing will be actively targeting all schools to ensure drivers are heeding the message,” he said.

“Any driver detected exceeding school zone speed limits will receive the appropriate infringement.”

Access Canberra will also be actively monitoring unsafe and illegal parking in school areas with Licence Plate Recognition vans, including parking detected in no-stopping zones, on verges or across pedestrian crossings.

With school areas being busy areas with pedestrians and traffic, this parking can limit visibility for road users and children seeking to cross roads.

Penalties for parking around schools range from between $114 to $600 as listed on the Access Canberra website.
