Two years after Jyle Molloy’s death, police and family want answers

Two years ago today, Jyle Molloy was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Pialligo Avenue. The ACT Policing Major Collision Team continues to investigate the death of the 28-year-old Queanbeyan man.

About 11.00pm on Sunday, 27 February 2022, Molloy was struck and killed by a vehicle on Pialligo Avenue heading towards Queanbeyan.

Police have confirmed a dark sedan picked up Molloy on Morshead Drive sometime before 11.00pm that evening. (Dash-cam footage from another vehicle, released in October 2022, shows this.)

Soon after, Molloy left the vehicle and was walking along Pialligo Avenue when he was struck and killed.

A white Toyota 4WD was in the area, CCTV footage showed.

Police believe people in the community can shed light on Molloy’s death, Senior Constable Will Stevenson, from ACT Policing’s Major Collision Team, said.

“Today, on the second anniversary of his death, I would like to repeat our previous calls to anyone with information on Jyle’s death to come forward,” Senior Constable Stevenson said.

“Jyle was a much loved and loving member of our community, and it is important that we discover what happened to him that night two years ago.

“Think about how you would feel if you lost your own child or loved one and not have answers. Then also knowing that there are people in the community that can help, but are unwilling to. It doesn’t leave them with great faith in humanity and makes a tragic situation worse.

“Any information, no matter how big or small, could be the piece that we need to ultimately discover what happened to Jyle.”

Police once again call on any of the occupants of either of the dark or white vehicles to come forward rather than wait for police to knock on the door. It is likely the occupants of the dark sedan were the last people to see Molloy alive.

Anyone who saw Molloy on the evening of 27 February two years ago anywhere between Russell and Pialligo, or was travelling eastbound on Pialligo Avenue, towards Queanbeyan, should contact police.

Police also ask the public to consider anyone who visited Canberra that night and may have been driving on this road. The Red Hot Summer Tour concert had finished earlier in the evening, and interstate visitors may have been leaving Canberra via Pialligo Avenue at this time.

“The 27 of February 2024 marks two years since our beloved Jyle was tragically taken away from us,” Molloy’s family said.

“We love Jyle beyond measure, and miss him endlessly. As a family, we struggle through each day, heavily grieving the loss of Jyle. Our hearts will forever ache for our son, brother, uncle, partner, and missing piece of our family.

“Due to this heinous act, our family will never be the same. We know someone out there knows something – please do the right thing and speak up.

“Please help our broken family bring Jyle the justice he deserves.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation into Molloy’s death is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
