Giants succumb to late Power surge

The Port Adelaide Power used a dominant last quarter to defeat the GWS Giants 9.9 (63) to 6.10 (46) at Metricon Stadium on Sunday afternoon, 12 July.

It was a low scoring arm-wrestle all game until four consecutive goals in the last quarter sealed the 17-point win for the Power.

The Power kicked the lone goal in a dour first quarter that featured plenty of skill errors from both sides.

The Giants’ first goal of the match came eight minutes into the second quarter when Toby Greene slotted one but they could only manage one more before half time as they went into the break trailing by 11 points.

The third quarter was the Giants’ best period of the match and consecutive goals to Jeremy Cameron and Lachie Whitfield gave them the lead.

A goal to Charlie Dixon after the three-quarter time siren gave the Power a 3-point leading heading into a crucial final quarter.

The Giants kicked the opening goal of the fourth quarter to regain the lead but from that point on it was all the Power.

Sam Powell-Pepper nailed a set shot from right in front to give the Power the lead before a 55-metre bomb from Kane Farrell extended the lead to 10 points.

Goals to Todd Marshall and Zak Butter gave the Power a commanding 21-point lead with just four minutes to go.

Young Lachie Ash kicked his first goal for the Giants with just under a minute to go but it was far too little too late as the Power ran out deserving 17-point winners.

The Giants are still yet to win the inside 50 count this season and were belted in that statistic 51-33 against the Power.

It’s a worrying trend for the Giants as they are 17th in the competition for inside 50s, averaging just 33.7 per game.

The Giants have another tough match this week when they take on the third-placed Brisbane Lions at Giants Stadium on Saturday afternoon, 18 July.
