Prescribed burns at Jerrabomberra Wetlands, Tidbinbilla today

Two prescribed burns are under way in Jerrabomberra Wetlands and Tidbinbilla today, aiming to reduce the fire hazard in the lead up to summer.

A woodpile burn across 3.75ha is the focus in Jerrabomberra Wetlands, while the burn at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve will target eucalypt and wattle debris.

Both burns started around 10am and there may be varying levels of smoke present in the area for the remainder of the afternoon.

An interactive map with details of the prescribed burns can be found online.

The burns are performed by experienced ACT Parks and Conservation fire managers, with today’s weather rating a low-moderate score on the fire rating scale.

All possible efforts are taken to conduct these burns in weather conditions that will minimise the impact of smoke.

People with asthma or other respiratory conditions are advised not to perform vigorous exercise in areas with smoke present, and to stay inside if possible.

As part of managing the controlled burn, a buffer zone of up to 20 metres is created around the whole perimeter of each.

ACT Parks and Conservation will also be adhering to all physical distancing and hygiene requirements, in line with COVID-19 restrictions in place currently.

For all information about upcoming burns in the ACT and surrounding regions, follow @ACTParks on Facebook.

Information and health advice for dealing with outdoor smoke can also be found by visiting ACT Health.

For tips on how to stay safe if there is smoke in the area, visit the Asthma Foundation website. If visible smoke in the area causes any emotional distress, please see the available resources on the ACT Health’s Mental Health website to help manage the impacts.
