Aboriginal artist collabs with Specsavers for Indigenous eye health

Specsavers Canberra is selling limited-edition glasses and sunglasses featuring the artwork of contemporary Aboriginal artist and Yuin woman, Rheanna Lotter. $25 from each pair sold will go towards The Fred Hollows Foundation, to continue their work closing the gap in Indigenous eye health. Ms Lotter said that empowering Indigenous communities to look after their eye health is also about rebuilding trust. “By coming together, we enable the acknowledgement of our past, and move towards a more united future.”

Filipina-Australian cartoonist collabs with Impala Skate

Filipina-Australian artist Mel Stringer, famous for her comics featuring curvy girls full of attitude, has partnered with Impala on the new Hera Cruiserboard. The metallic purple trucks and design featuring adorable neon friends chilling at the skatepark is true to Stringer’s quirky style. The brand is also in partnership with National Forest Foundation, with three trees planted for every one harvested in making the skateboards.

One in five future thyroid cancers linked to excess weight

The first ever Australia-based study to examine thyroid cancer threat, found one in five future thyroid cancers are linked to excess weight. The study, published in the International Journal of Cancer and led by UNSW’s Dr Maarit Laaksonen, discovered obesity has doubled in Australia in the last 20 years, and as a result, overweight and obesity will be associated with 10,000 thyroid cancers in the next decade. Presently, 75 per cent of Australian men and 60 per cent of Australian women are overweight or obese. Dr Laaksonen said while thyroid cancer is currently two to three times more common in women, this can be expected to change in the upcoming decade, likely due to the higher rates of obesity in men. For both sexes, avoiding excess weight, especially obesity, should be a priority for thyroid cancer prevention.
