ACT Health: Look after yourself this holiday season

ACT Health encourages Canberrans to take some time for their mental health and wellbeing this holiday season after another challenging year.

For many, the Christmas and New Year period is a time to celebrate and spend time with family and friends.

However, for some it’s a difficult time and can exacerbate feelings of loneliness, stress, anxiety, and depression.

ACT Health reminds the community that taking care of yourself and making time to do what is important to you is part of staying healthy and well this festive season.

“Be kind to yourself and others over this holiday period, and don’t forget to reach out for help when you need it,” said Dr Elizabeth Moore, Coordinator General of the Office of Mental Health and Wellbeing.

“Canberra has faced a challenging three years that has included the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters. We know people may not have taken time yet to reflect on how they are feeling, talk to someone, and seek help.

“Remember, there is always someone to listen and help if you are experiencing distress.”

The following crisis and information services are available during the holidays:

•           Lifeline – 13 11 14. For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, text Lifeline on 0477 131 144

•           MindMap youth portal – 1800 862 111

•           Access Mental Health Team – 1800 629 354 or 02 6205 1065

•           Suicide Call Back Service – 1300 659 467

The following services can provide in-person support throughout the festive season:

•           Belconnen Safe Haven, 56 Lathlain Street, Tuesday – Saturday (including public holidays) from 3pm – 10pm

•           ACT Health’s Walk-in Centres, for when other frontline services such as GPs might not be available
