Blumers Lawyers profile: Jessica Carlisle-Goldblatt

A born litigator, solicitor Jessica Carlisle-Goldblatt has a mind for facts and an open ear to clients during one of the most difficult times in life.

Starting at Blumers Personal Injury Lawyers in 2020 as a paralegal, Jessica went on to be a law clerk where she gained invaluable teachings from a tenured female mentor.

“We are there at a time when people are trying to put their lives back together. I love getting to learn and challenge myself in a way that does good and has an impact on real people’s lives,” she says.

Jessica earned her Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the Australian National University, where she also studied science and French, juggling a wide range of knowledge and interests.

“The beauty of law is that it isn’t pigeonholed,” she says. “You are not limited to practising law as a criminal lawyer or a family lawyer.

“Working in personal injury, I get to study medical records every day and work with medical negligence cases, an overlap of two major interests of mine.”

Today, Jessica is in the final stages of her Bachelor of Science majoring in Biochemistry at the University of Melbourne.

Since graduating from the ANU, she has been applying her scientific mind to personal injury cases at Blumers.

“I was lucky to come to work at Blumers because this type of work suits me very well. I didn’t think I would ever find such a good fit straight away,” says Jessica.

“While I was hesitant to become a solicitor – as I really enjoyed working with my mentor – since I’ve become one it’s been great working with the other solicitors. There’s a huge pool of knowledge and experience to learn from at Blumers.

“I met Mark [Blumer] at my first interview. He interviewed me with Amy Burr. He was saying that he’s meant to be retired, and he’s been saying that ever since,” she laughs.

“I remember it felt more like a conversation and less like an interview, which was lovely. Mark is a talker; he likes to get to know people and he always has a bit of wisdom to pass on.

“Looking back, that first interview was very similar to the rest of my experience at Blumers,” she says.

“Blumers’ work culture breaks the mould; It’s collaborative with an atmosphere of no one person having all the answers. We always want to collaborate, including the senior solicitors.

“It’s an environment where you really can ask questions and learn, rather than get told what to do.”

“Definitely not ambulance chasers! My case was a medical negligence issue that was extremely complex. These guys kept me informed and worked tirelessly to achieve the best possible outcome. Very happy, highly recommend.”

When asked what makes Blumers stand out from the rest, she answers “The orange!”

“A lawyer’s job is to explain the jargon to clients so that they can make an informed decision. A lawyer shouldn’t be telling a client what to do, they should be providing the best advice.

“That’s why Blumers’ collaborative environment works the best in personal injury.”
