On a bright, sunny, winter afternoon in Canberra, around 600-700 BLM protesters attended the Black Lives Matter protest held on the lawns of Australian Parliament House yesterday, Saturday 6 June.
It was the second #BlackLivesMatter (#BLM) protest held at Parliament House in Canberra in two days, both of which were peaceful and where participants were also taking note of social distancing restrictions. Both local protests attracted several hundred participants.
CW journalist Cassandra Power spoke with some of the Canberra BLM protesters present at yesterday’s protest about why being there was important to them. They share their views in the above video package.
Ms Power said ACT Policing had a “friendly and helpful” presence at the protest, which remained peaceful and respectful of COVID-19 restrictions.
The site of yesterday’s protest was moved to Australian Parliament House after having originally been scheduled to take place at the nearby Embassy of the United States of America, across the road in Yarralumla.
