Canberra Daily’s 2023 in review: May

In the final month of autumn, secondhand fashion was on the collective mind of Canberrans. CW investigated why op shops have become so expensive and shone a light on one dressing people in need who are returning to work.

News that a 95-year-old great-grandmother had been tasered by a NSW police officer while attending a call to a nursing home in Cooma left the public angry and questioning protocols.

Plans for the ACT Government to take over Calvary Public Hospital were announced as they marked the land for the delivery of the new government-owned Northside Hospital. Canberra twins hosted a walk to raise money for research of motor neurone disease (MND) as the pair shared their journey of life with MND.

New northside hospital to be built on Calvary Public Hospital site

The ACT Government announced on 10 May its $1 billion commitment in the 2023-24 ACT Budget for the delivery of the new Northside Hospital on the site of the Calvary Public Hospital. The medical facility in Bruce is to be owned by the ACT Government and operated by Canberra Health Services.

Footage of police tasering 95yo great-grandma ‘confronting’

Shocking footage of a NSW police officer tasering frail 95-year-old great-grandmother, Clare Nowland in an aged care facility in Cooma was labelled as confronting as public outrage increased. Aged care staff called the police when they feared the woman, who used a walker as a mobility aid, was in possession of a kitchen knife. Family friend and community advocate Andrew Thaler called on NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb to meet with the family as he questioned what threat the 43kg elderly woman posed.

Why have op shops become so expensive?

There’s no denying charity op shops have become more expensive in the past decade. CW’s Anja de Rozario spoke with Lindsay Rae, Director of Commercial Operations for Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn to find out why.

Best Dressed store styles Canberra’s vulnerable

The Communities at Work Best Dressed op shop celebrated its one-year anniversary at its central Manuka location. The op shop originally started in Dickson as an extension of the Communities at Work clothing program which helps clothe financially vulnerable people returning to work, free of charge. The program had so many donations, they were able to start a store – the proceeds of which go towards stocking two food pantries.

Canberra twins join forces in fight against motor neurone disease

Twins Kobe and Ashlee Lopez hosted a walk to raise funds to find a cure for motor neurone disease.

Canberra twins Ashlee and Kobe Lopez shared their story with CW as they prepared to walk to raise money for a cure for motor neurone disease (MND). Last year, Ashlee was one of the two people to be diagnosed with MND in Australia each day, at just 39 years old. While he can no longer talk, the former boxer is still a fighter, says Kobe, who has become his voice in their mission to raise awareness and funds for MND research.
