Canberra Daily’s 2022 in review: November

November started with tragedy after the bodies of a local mother and her two sons were discovered in a Gungahlin waterway. Things continued to seem dark when the ABS released a study saying that mortality rates in Australia had increased this year.

A not so smooth criminal gave us a laugh when his masterplan went awry. The light rail construction of stage two is set to annoy commuters for the next several years, and one of our local restaurants was announced as the best place to get an Indian feed in the whole of Australia.

Tragedy struck when two bodies were found in Yerrabi Pond in Gungahlin early morning on 5 November. The search began for a missing eight-year-old after the bodies appeared to be those of his mother and younger brother. As time went on, the older boy was also found deceased in the pond.

Excess mortality increases in 2022

A study from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that the mortality rate had increased by more than 17 per cent in the first seven months of the year. ACT Health attributed the higher than average rates to an ageing and increasing population, while former United Australia Party MP Craig Kelly said it was due to adverse side effects of the COVID-19 vaccines.

Construction is expected to take a minimum of four years to complete, with traffic congestion predicted to increase peak time commutes by 15 minutes.
