Canberra’s best coffee: Southside

The joy of coffee extends well beyond our inner suburbs; that’s especially true in Canberra’s south. This CW list of the best southside coffee huts will help you start your morning off right.

Curtin

Red Brick Espresso in Curtin is cute, casual and part of a local coffee roasting empire.

The startup success story gets a thumbs up from users across all the platforms.

A very recent Google review from Local Guide Cedric says:

“Up there in terms of coffee and quite enjoyable food, albeit with limited options.”

Farrer

Farrer’s Fox & Bow, with its cool outdoor areas, graffiti-laden urban look and plenitude of happy customers takes our top spot on the southside.

Google Local Guide Sienna Robot241 agrees:

“Lovely people lovely place. Food is amazing and a great little hideaway spot to have coffee and lunch. It has a cute little outdoor area on the side for kids to play too.”

Kambah

If you’re in Kambah, the Shabby Attic is your best bet for morning mud.

Google Local Guide Viking Bunny says:

“Delicious and their staff was really friendly and inviting. The coffee was well made – not burnt or bitter – and they have Crack Bark! (It’s just bark here but it reminds me of the Cracker Candy my grandmother used to make for the holidays.) There is plenty of seating indoor and out, perfect for all weathers. I will be coming back!”

Chisholm

Public Place, Chisholm.

Public Place in Chisholm is hit-or-miss with its reviewers, but it ranks up there for southside options.

It was a hit for Google Local Guide Tim Wallace:

“Coffee, cakes, pies and sausage rolls, burgers and all sorts of other superb eats!! Call in to the Public Place when you’re at or near Chisholm shops!”

Gowrie

Common Grounds, Gowrie.

Common Grounds in Gowrie has a loyal customer base and a strong showing on review sites.

Google Local Guide Matthew Parkitny was impressed:

“Extremely friendly staff with delicious food and of course some of the best coffee in Canberra. Highly recommended!”

Rivett

Pitch Black Cafe, Rivett.

Pitch Black Café in Rivett only has a few Trip Advisor reviews but the latest ones have been from very happy customers.

On Google, there are many people happy to spruik for this little spot, including KandTCanberra:

A hidden gem!

In these Covid times, eating out is a treat and this little suburban cafe was a real find. Excellent sunny, protected outdoor tables were appreciated by us all, as was the emphasis on social distancing. Coffee was great (everyone went back for a second) and the food is simple, fresh and very reasonably priced. We had a light lunch, and they were quite happy to do simple toasted sandwiches on request. And the Portuguese tarts were an absolute treat. This was a most enjoyable outing and we’ll be back.”

Phillip

Coffee Cafe, Phillip.

Coffee Café in Phillip has some series coffee cred – it’s right there in the name.

Lots of happy customers at this little gem, in an area with stiff competition.

Among them is Google Local Guide Dea Buchan:

“I’m a proud regular of this coffee shop. Amazing coffee, even better staff and service! They have great food – wraps and croissants and burgers, etc., and fresh juice too.”

Hughes

Home Ground Cafe, Hughes.

Home Ground Café in Hughes – not to be confused with Common Grounds in Gowrie – has a rip snorting reputation online and one of the highest ratings in Canberra at 4.7.

Google Local Guide BubbleGumQA Gamer is one of their fans:

“One of the best coffees in Canberra! My Philippine friend Ramón! Is making a great coffee in Hughes to enjoy or start your day! I always visit his shop to get energy and great times talking with him and his workers. Thanks guys! Highly recommend place!”

Weston

Little Billy’s, Weston. Image via Facebook.

Highly rated Little Billy’s in Weston is highly commended for its coffee and customer service. What else do you need?

Google Local Guide Rhiannon Ryan says:

“Lovely food. Friendly and helpful staff. Great dog-friendly café.”
