Canberra’s Tom Green re-signs with GWS for four more years

GWS have pulled off a huge signing on the eve of the AFL season, locking in Canberra’s Tom Green to a new four-year contract.

The young gun came through the Giants Academy and will remain in the orange and charcoal until at least the end of 2027.

Green is the grandson of four-time Richmond premiership great Michael, but has now committed long-term to the Giants, who drafted him at pick 10 in the 2019 national draft.

The 22-year-old has played 45 games across his three seasons in the competition so far, improving every year and establishing himself as one of the best young talents in the game.

The hard nut thrives in contested situations and is known for his elite handball skills. Green is coming off a career best season where he averaged 24.3 disposals, 5 clearances and 4.2 tackles per game.

GWS General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, said securing Green’s signature was a high priority for the club.

“Tom is one of the best young talents in the game and as someone who has come through the Giants Academy, we were keen to secure his services long-term and we’re really pleased to have done that before the season has started,” McCartney said.

“He’s a fantastic player with a drive to succeed and he’s had a brilliant pre-season on the training track, which we can’t wait to see translate into games over the coming weeks.

“He’s not only growing from strength to strength on the field but his elevation into our leadership group this season is a well-earned recognition of the influence he has within our group.

“Tom’s signature on a four-year deal is a fantastic endorsement of our new program under new head coach Adam Kingsley.”

Green looms as a future captain of the Giants, bumped up to the club’s leadership group earlier this week despite his young age.

It takes care of the Giants’ biggest contract needs but they’ll need to get moving on others, including dashing half-back Lachie Ash.

Former No.4 draft pick Ash is out of contract at season’s end and could be tempted by a move back to his home state of Victoria.

Green himself could have perhaps been tempted by a move to Melbourne as he is the grandson of Richmond hall of famer and four-time premiership player Michael Green.
