Double demerits in ACT and NSW this June long weekend

Double demerits will be in force this June long weekend, from 12am on Friday to 11.59pm on Monday, ACT Policing reminds Canberrans.

Double demerits will apply to all speeding, seatbelt, and mobile phone offences, as well as riding while not wearing a helmet.

All other traffic offences will attract an additional demerit point.

Acting Inspector Ken Williams, Officer in Charge of ACT Road Policing, urged drivers to take extra care on the roads this weekend, especially those travelling interstate.

“We always see an exodus from the ACT on long weekends, so if you are travelling interstate, remember to drive to the conditions and take regular breaks,” Acting Inspector Williams said.

“Here in the Territory, the message is simple: we want to see people doing the right thing. Slow down, obey the speed limit, and if you are drinking across the weekend, please don’t drive. Find an alternate way to get home.

“Police don’t want to hand out infringements, but if we see drivers disobeying the road rules, we won’t hesitate to do so.”

Across the border, NSW Police advised that Operation King’s Birthday 2023 will commence at 12.01am on Friday 9 June and conclude at 11.59pm on Monday 12 June.

Throughout the operation, double demerit points will apply for speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt, and motorcycle helmet offences, said Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner David Waddell, and NSW Chief of the Centre for Road Safety Bernard Carlon.
